Untitled
I Am

I am the sum total of all the parts
    of my ancestral equation.
I am a vast collection -- a priceless work of art.
My bones are knit in symmetric harmony
    cut from a long-ago pattern --
    chosen from multitudes of millions.
My eyes reflect the Emerald Isles --
Land of my great-greats who braved wild waters
to escape famine in their homeland.
My fair skin is that of the Irish lass
hiding in the hull of an ancient
    sea-faring vessel.
I am the heart of pioneers who met
    and mingled and married
    while crossing the Cumberlands.
I am the harvest of the first crops
    planted in the virgin soil
    of mountain gardens.
My veins are woven -- intertwined
    in and around the lifeblood
    of those distant souls
    who settled and stayed.
My very self is made up
of genes and traits and talents
from ghostly ancestors who gifted me
    with parts of themselves.
My being is merely a chance happening --
    consummation of a courtship
by candlelight in some dusty parlour.
I am the sprouted seed of a prior time --
when two sojourners along the way
    quite by chance -- created
Who I am.

Synopsis
This poem reflects on the fact that all of us are a mysterious mixture of all the people who have joined through time to create each of us -- a unique creation indeed! It is called "I Am." Hope you enjoy it.
