Missing my good friend tonight...
And now I lie here
I can’t sleep without you here
To hold in my arms
Enveloping your smooth skin
With a roughneck safety net
You so vividly seemed to desire
While most would turn away.

A year has come and gone
From one sunny afternoon
I heard your voice
On my end of the tin can string
Referring to Audrey Hepburn as a fox
(I most certainly agree)
While you compare her to a woman you know
Who kept promising she’d see you again soon
(Secretly I was in love with you but scared to death)
But still the same her flight delayed

And now I lie here
I can’t sleep without you here
To hold in my arms
Enveloping your smooth skin
With a roughneck safety net
You so vividly seemed to desire
While most would turn away.

A year’s gone by
Between me yelling at you one minute
Laughing with you the next
Arguing over your perplexing obsession with Catholicism
Sarcastically driving you crazy and wondering
How one simple belief could make or break one’s happiness
I went from hating you to being fascinated by you
(And now I love you so)
We never ate, or slept, just laughed
And kissed and thought and pondered
The futures we could make together
Wrapping your arms around me so tight
(It’s ironic)
Because I could never sleep beside you…

And now I lie here
I can’t sleep without you here
To hold in my arms
Enveloping your smooth skin
With a roughneck safety net
You so vividly seem to desire
While most would turn away.

A year’s gone by
Since I faced my fate
I love you
And it’s been 8 months
Since the last time
I’ve heard your voice
Kissed your lips
Or held your hand
And now the only time I sleep is holding a pillow
We used to fight over every night before bed.

I lie here
I can’t sleep without you here
To hold in my arms
I miss my good friend tonight.

The longing is so touchingly deep. The can't live with you and can't live without you theme is in effect here. To have a friend like this is to have a true friend. I can see this as a song, a sad love song ballad. The 80's song "Every Rose Has It's Thorn" by Poison comes to mind.

It's not clear to me how the relationship ended. What fate did you face? The friend ending the relationship? I guess. That's what I heard. The lines are affecting. Talk about love usually is. The reader wants you to get back together. Nice.

A Word from the Writer
Note to Reader: 7/29/09 Edit. An explanation in response to a comment: The love story with the noted "friend" in this poem ended when he was killed in a car accident to no fault of his own the day after asking me to spend his life with him. I thought this explanation might be a good idea for others who might read this in the future so it is better understood.
