Writing Family Stories: My Cousin Peter
We can tell stories about family members who teach us things, these stories provide a picture of family life and illustrate relationships in a family too.

My cousin Peter was always one of the happiest people you would ever want to meet. He wore a smile and wasn’t concerned with such things and what outfit to wear or what new toys or gadgets to purchase. He lived on his own in a group home and often attended family gatherings.

My cousin Peter had Down Syndrome.

When we were growing up and he attended our family get-togethers he liked to have a broom and sweep. He could sweep the countertops and furniture as well as the floor and my aunt or my cousin would take the broom away from him, just in case he banged someone in the head with it. He was also quite fond of the yellow pages. He loved to page through it and occupied himself with that as we gathered and talked around him.

He was a happy-go-lucky guy. When I graduated from the University of Wisconsin Journalism school and got my first job as a reporter on the local weekly newspaper it was a thrill for me to do a special story about the group home where my cousin lived. My aunt was featured in the story and Peter's photo appeared. It was a happy occasion for my family and we still have the newspaper clipping of that article from long ago.

He passed away last year and I was very fortunate to have him in my life.

Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful little snippet of your life. I could picture your lovely cousin so clearly as told through your own fond eyes. I look forward to reading more about you. I was struck by your photo - not sure why - you just look kind and gentle and...interesting!
