The Final Test

  When I reach the autumn of my life;
When my hair has turned to gray;
When the tracks of time show on my face
And I await my judgement day,

I know my thoughts will often turn
To the place of heavenly rest;
I know I'll wonder, worry some,
If I'll past that final test.

What trophies have I left behind?
What triumphs have I won?
What kindness have I spread around?
What goodness have I done?

Did I stop to help a man in need
When he was down and out?
Did I greet my children with a smile
Or always with a shout?

Did I try to teach the golden rule
And practice it myself?
Or did I preach it readily,
Then put it on the shelf?

But when these thoughts and worries come
To prey upon my mind
I'll simply recall all He's given me,
And these things will remind

That God is good and full of love
...He's this and so much more,
And I know that I'll be welcome
When I knock on heaven's door.
