Days of Yesteryear

Now, I was raised at a time when the wild west was dead and gone,
Except on Saturday afternoons when I'd ride with Hopalong
Fighting indians and outlaws from the back of a great horse,
Or saving the rancher's daughter from the villain, and of course,
I'd push a herd of cattle on a trail drive with John Wayne,
And with him chase the stampede as the cattle went insane.

When Mom would say "Turn the t.v. off and take yourself outside",
I'd turn, and swift as lighting slap the gun there at my side,
And say "Smile when you say that stranger or I'll fill you full of lead",
Then do my best to duck the broom that was swooshing past my head.
Then I'd mount my faithful pony made from a stick and a little twine,
And ride off into the sunset in a dream that was devine.

Now, I just knew that I'd become a real cowboy by and by,
And that desire stayed with me through my teens, though I don't know why.
Then I got my chance as a hired hand on Hall's Ranch in Nebraskaland,
And I loved it even though it was less wild then I had planned.
For there were no robbers holding up the stage, nor indians on the warpath;
Just lots of hard work from the back of a horse while avoiding the ranch foreman's rath.

Now when I look back on the years of my yourh and reflect on the fantasies I had,
Reliving them brings a warm feeling inside, and the memories make my heart glad.
But I think of the kids growing up here today, their hero's with rings in their ears...
Their hair cut in every configuration, and their pants barely covering their rears.
I shake my head and say a silent prayer, for the future I can't help but deplore,
For nobody seems to want to grow up to be a cowboy anymore.
