Masquerade

Masquerade

By: Kayla Meyers

Played my part again in the masquerade

Filled in the cracks, painted a smile on my face

I danced again the deceitful waltz, hid my soul in disgrace

All around me I see the masks of Cheshire grins and lying eyes

And I know they can see I don’t belong in this world

Of perfection and empty fantasies

What can I do and what can I say

To fool my heart again today?

If I repeat the words, if I just pretend

Will you believe that I’m okay?

The mask is chipped, falling from my face

But if I smile, bid the pain away

Maybe I’ll fool myself someday

Painted illusions and pretty words

Chase me in my sleep, as the phantoms scream inside my dreams

The lie is melting, colors drip down the walls

And without the veneer, where can we hide?

Stain glass windows break, scattering on the floor

And there’s nowhere left to go, ‘cause we can’t tell what’s real anymore

Well I don’t care if it’s destroyed, this place of unreality

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust

It all comes to an end anyway

All I want is all that’s real

The flaws and tatters in my soul

Don’t care if I’m right, if it’s illogical

All I want is something real

There is a balance of life; for every positive there will be a negative, and with every negative soon will come a positive. If you hold on long enough through all the bad, you'll be able to find something wonderful and cherish it all that much more.

Synopsis
When I began working on this it was intended to lyrics that were meant for my good friend Joshua, however as I wrote I realized it was a much better free-verse prose than a song.
