An Old Toad Frog

An Old Toad Frog

By

Jerry Wayne Humphrey

There was once a big old toad

Who spent a lot of time hopping across the road

He hopped across to one side each morning

And back again to the other side each night

I used watch him hopping he was such a sight

He always hopped faster coming back each night

I followed him one morning to see where he went

He went quickly like on a mission he had been sent

He ended up in a big pasture, as the sun was bright

As the insects would awaken he would take a bite

He would sit so very still in his spot in the meadow

He'd pick which bug to eat it was quite a show

He never had to move around like a bird on a limb

He just sat quietly until the right one came to him

He'd open his mouth and snatch a meal from the air

The insect never had a chance it didn't seemed fair

Yes indeed he was quite smart for an old toad

When it was time he'd hop back across that road

He'd hop back to his home next to an old pond

It was a place of which he was quite fond

When it got dark he would sit and loudly croak

To others there as the mist gathered like a cloak

Sometime a lady toad would come along

Like she was drawn to his loud croaking song

Then away out into the pond they would go

They'd swim and disappear in the water below

He sure had a happy life there that old frog

With his lady and his friends in that warm bog
