Skyscraper

Mostpeople pass by our nationsskylines every day without ever looking up. The detail from building to buildingin each American city is as defining as the people themselves.  The strength and pride that existswithin those structures have been instrumental in shaping America during the1900s.

Thefirst recognized skyscraper was built in 1885 in Chicago. It stood only 10stories and was 138 feet high-miniature in comparison to the Sears Tower at1,451 feet. There is no official height at which a building becomes askyscraper, just when it appears to have a prevailing influence compared to itsneighbors.

Skyscrapershave chronicled the maturation of our society.  As we become more technologically advanced, so do ourarchitectural and design needs. Follow the transformation of America in chronological order on the pagesthat follow:  From the gothic styleof the Woolworth building, built almost 100 years ago, to the environmentallyconscience New York Times building completed in 2007.

Tall, strong and standing in proud solitude, Americasbuildings represent the path wevetraveled as a nation and serve as our road map into the 21st century.  Next time you pass by, stop and lookup.
