The Empire State Building held the title of the tallest skyscraper in the world for 40 years and was the tallest man-made structure for 23 years. This art deco giant was named one of the 7 wonders of the modern world by the American Society of Civil Engineers. On June 24, 1986, the US Department of the Interior designated The Empire State Building as a National Historic Landmark.  Over 110 million people have visited the outdoor observatories. The first year of its opening the observation deck took in over a million dollars, as much as its owners made in rent that year. In 1951, The Empire State Building sold to Roger L. Stevens for a record $51 million. At the time, the sale was the largest price ever paid for a single structure in real estate history.  This building was completed in one year and forty five days and cost $40,948,900 to build.
