Story Structure of Avatar

Theme
The theme of this film is under much debate since its opening in late December.  Many people speculate that the theme parallels the white mans inability to control his greed.  Its a similar story to what the first settlers did to the Indians as what our present day military is believed to be doing in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Premise
A young Marine finds himself in the middle of a land dispute on a foreign planet.

Plot/Synopsis
A young crippled marine named Jake Sully is shipped out to planet Pandora in order to take over his deceased brothers avatar.  The Avatar is used to communicate with the indigenous tribe that resides on the same land a independent contractor is looking to excavate. Things begin to get complicated when the world he was sent to help destroy turns out to be what hes been looking for his whole life.

Story Arc Structure
The story follows the traditional three act structure beginning the film with the introduction to all the main characters and puts them in an ordinary world.  The main story consists of a scientist who is responsible for any Avatar mingling that goes on in the story. The indigenous tribe is called the Na'vi and the Contractor who is looking for the natural resources the Na've sit on hires Marines for security.  When one of these Marines takes over an Avatar he comes emotionally closer than expected to a Na'vi woman woman.

The dramatic presence is set at the very beginning of the film. The story takes place on another planet with dramatic situations and events making the film a Sci-fi action drama.

The inciting incident in the end of act 1 is Jake Sully first going into the body of his Avatar and entering the Na'vi tribe.

Many obstacles come across Jake Sully in his time as the Avatar.
1. Falls in love with native Na'vi woman.
2. Must provide information that will lead to the downfall of the Na'vi
3. Must go through rituals in the Na'vi to become a member
4. Try and get his girl back.

First culmination of the film is when Jake Sully passes his inaugural tests and is allowed into the tribe. He is giving information to the marines as well as living harmoniously with the Na'vi.

The midpoint comes into play when Jake Sully realizes what he has done.  His tribe is getting destroyed and he cant stop the marines.

The climax of the film is when he is kicked from the tribe and forced to abort his Avatar mission by his marine commander.  It looks as though all hope is lost.

Resolution is when Jake Sully rally's all the tribes of Pandora and defeats the Marines.  He has brought peace to Pandora and is allowed back into the tribe where his local partner awaits him.

In the denouement Jake Sully is permanently made into a Na'vi alien.

The characters are put on Pandora in the year 2154 which places them in a place and time in the ordinary world.
