Love, a Beautiful Foe

Love is not always a kind creature

She is sometimes evil, wicked with a dark ruthless heart.

She would tempt the purest soul

And attack the truest of Holy intentions.

Yet in her plight she brings joy,

A happiness unparalleled by any other force

Her kisses are an elixir,

Which evokes passion, desire, and bliss.

This elixir though is poison,

A poison that infects the very membrane of the soul.

Her words, an artists’inspiration,

Which move mountains and change the heart of a country.

But these words are curses,

Spoken in tongues that drive an intellect to madness.

Oh woe the conflicts,

The grip that love hath hold upon the human heart.

If only we were free,

But would with this freedom come sorrow and emptiness?

If love should only be kind,

If she were only to be made of light to shine down peace.

But alas this is not so,

For with the grace of love shall always come pain.

Hearts can never escape,

Love’s Syrain trap to which men will always fall.

Ah Love, life’s beautiful foe,

Mankind can never live without his imminent undoing.

A lot of emotion this writing has. You paint love as the elusive trickster and enemy of man, yet it is the delight and inspiration of the heart. I like that you compare and contrast, shoot down and build up the emotion of love. Very different and unique.

The dichotomy of love/hate... good and evil... welcomed love with her unwelcomed pain... play well in this thoughtful narrative. Though some of your words are ‘unusually/perhaps mistakenly’ meshed... the substance of this piece is ‘clearly’ stated. Well done!
