Winter Nights

Winter Nights

At heavens command the snow doth fall

More majestic than the northern lights

As the midnight moon unveils the clouds

Streaking the darkness in radiant heights

As the stars glide mercurial across the skies

How restlessly they do speed and quiver

A breath can make them as a breath has made

Winter closes tightly round and they are lost forever

A splendid glistening snow lightly falling on the land

Frost creeping like nourishment on a dying flame

Tis yours to judge how wide the limits will eventually stand

From God’s grace and truth to life’s unquiet dream

This evening more than usual it seems such a wondrous night

Sitting here by the window with your hand in mine

Watching this illuminated snow-fall

We have grown peaceful as old age twilight
