MY TRIBUTE TO
Bernard Jeffrey McCullough
BERNIE MAC
KING OF COMEDY
October 5, 1957- August 9, 2008
My fellow Chicagoan
In the House of Hope on Chicago’s South Side -
Bernie Mac’s service was held where he was eulogized
In attendance were his fellow “Kings of Comedy”
Cedric the Entertainer, Steve Harvey and D.L. Hughley
Followed by a long list of comedians and other dignitaries
From California to Chicago they came
To honor the "Mac Man" who
Always made time to sign an autograph or
Just to shake somebody’s hand
Samuel L. Jackson
Don Cheadel
Salli Richardson
Chris Rock
Tom Joyner
Juwan Howard
Ali LeRoi
Mike Collier
Bruce Bruce
George Wallace and
Mayor Richard Dailey
All came to pay their respects -
While Oprah Winfrey, Barack Obama, Maxine Waters,
The O’Jays and Andy Garcia’s personal notes were read at the
Service - without any disaffect
Bernard Jeffrey McCullough aka “Bernie Mac” was
A family man, the “King” of his castle
A loving father and a wonderful husband
A born and bred son of Chicago &
One of our country’s most exceptional comedians
Known for his tough-talking, controversial and
Sometimes over the top exploits
He was dazzlingly skilled in
His every action and thought
He was a fan of other actors
A true and loyal friend
A champion in his neighborhood
Bernie Mac was a true Chicagoan
Mac could say things that others wanted to say
He always had the cohunes, and the heart to convey
Whatever it was - that was on his mind and
For those that didn’t like it
He’d invite to partake in a smooch
Where the sun didn’t shine
Mac never minded the lack of privacy
That came with his fame
Whether shaking hands with a presidential elect
Or signing an autograph for a fan
To the Mac man it was all
Just one and the same
In every sense of the word
Bernie was a realist
He wasn’t afraid to let anybody know
That he wasn’t perfect
He starred in movies,
He was nominated for Emmys and
Other such meaningful awards
That for those of us still here - we will
Always have a chronological record of
Mac loved Chicago and everything it entails
It’s where he first reigned as the "King of Comedy"
It’s where his love of comedy will forever prevail
Bernie said “I ain’t scared of you Mother-F- - ker’s”
And even though he always said it as a joke
Being the "Mac Man" that he was
He meant every word that he spoke
Bernie Mac will be sorely missed throughout all the land
But nowhere will he be missed as much –
As by his fellow Chicagoans!
My condolences to the entire “Mac” family
For Ronda McCullough - Bernie Mac’s wife and
Je’Niece Childress – The Mac Man’s daughter
