The Matchbox

I have a matchbox,

Cardboard and small.

Once filled with matches,

Went empty one fall.

Seemed like a waste

To throw it away.

It was such a nice box,

A neat little tray.

But the front was quite ugly

And so was the back,

So I took out my sharpies

And colored it black.

How pretty, I concluded.

Now what should I do?

How about I decorate

Will purple glitter glue?

Marvelous, said I,

And took out my pen.

Wouldn’t it be great

To put thing I write in?

Creativity flew

And soon it was filled

With juicy dark secrets,

And I was quite thrilled.

What else? What else?

 What else can I add?

I have a picture of my

Cousin’s boyfriend’s dad!

Oh look! I cried.

I have much more.

A miniature painting

Of an abstract door.

Why not a leaf

From my mother’s dead plant?

Or a strange-looking crumb

I found on an ant.

A broken toothpick

I found on the floor.

I fat piece of gum

I bought at the store.

A family of dust bunnies

From under my bed.

A couple of hairs

From my very own head.

A Lego, a splinter,

An old bent screw.

An old note from school

That says, I LOVE U!

Hooray! Whoopee!

How much more can I get?

Maybe some hair bands,

But will it all fit?

It did and it does

Still hold them today,

All those treasures

I almost threw away.

What a chest it makes

Without metal or locks.

A quaint little container,

That old matchbox.
