Comparison
her lips are coral
so smooth and perfect
as though made out of plastic
curving upward in a coy little smile
that makes her face shine

she has bright glowing skin
the color of melted sunshine
tender and flawless as a newborn's
her cheeks tinted pink
in the faintest of blushes

her eyes are shaped like almonds
tilted ever so slightly down
like those of a puppy
the turquoise surrounding the pupil
as clear as ocean waves

her hair is shimmery
golden brown
draping over her shoulder
like a velvet curtain
set in place for a picture

next to hers my own lips seem parched
and faded
my skin isn't soft
or clear
or anything near perfect
my eyes are pale green
my eyelashes blond
together they're so light
sometimes I wonder where they disappear to
my frizzy mane is a monstrous wonder
few have ever seen
and somehow I doubt
that she's ever broken hair brushes
combing through her silken locks

should I jealous?
should I do everything in my power
to make me more like her?
should I waste my life staring at her picture
in agony
knowing I will never look the same?
should I?
will I?

I have ambitions
and dreams of greatness
that have nothing to do
with the beauty of my face
but with the beauty of my accomplishments
I have hopes of helping others
through my work
and personality
my children won't remember what I looked like
they'll remember who I was
and what I stood for
so tell me
why should I worry about her beauty
in comparison to my own
when I have all that?
why should anyone?

This is a most interesting comparison... apples to oranges. Would you compare a woman to a man, a male to female, the soft vs. the rough, the beauty to the beast, the strong to the weak, the feminine energy to the masculine? All the things you imagine of the beauty of all she represents..., could it not also be possible that she, to you in secret admirers all that you represent, and who, much like yourself, spends countless hours painstakingly looking at your picture, wondering to herself, how beautiful 'you' are?
