There Is Innocence In Old Men

There is innocence in old men to be found within their longing their silence their shaky wandering hands.

There is innocence in old men, it can be felt when they hang their heads low without expression like dead weights lifeless at the end of another day.

There is innocence in old men absorbed when saliva soaks loosely down their shirts tired frayed and worn.

There is innocence in old soldiers displayed in faraway stares as they rock silently upon the front porch of their homes.

There is innocence in old soldiers who cry out in pain as if still upon the battlefield while they reach out for a buddy long gone these many years.

There is innocence in old soldiers noticed within each shaking step they take while leaning into the forms of another.

There is innocence in this old man before me, tiny now, sagging flesh and bone, hanging loosely, removed from us, still lost in his war.

There is innocence in this old man whose arms reach up from his bed to pull me down for one last moment of intimacy.

There is innocence in this old man whose skin and bone curl retract and ball and twist up within the sheets as he is pulled inward a shield against time which slowly reaches out and takes him from us, one more loss.

Synopsis
This poem was inspired by older veterans of war. In other words old men, whom I adore.
