THE LITTLE FISHERMAN

Hey there Mister,

have ya got a dime to spare?

I wanna buy a crawdad

to catch a fish in there.

I can spare a dime, young man,

but I’ll need to know just why,

You think you can catch a fish

and that crawdad you can buy.

“Cuz my Daddy taught me how to fish.

How to catch ‘em without fail.

I can weigh ‘em, an’ measure ‘em too,

from their head down to their tail.

Daddy said, “You stand in the water,

to feel the river’s flow.

Cast your line out…not too deep

and let yer line out slow.

Now patience is the key, son,

stand as still as still can be,

So the fish will come a bite’n.”

That’s what my Daddy told me.

He said, “You gotta feel the line

an’ when you feel it tug a bit,

Give ‘at line one good jerk

and you can call  ‘at one a hit.”

So how ’bout it Mister,

have ya got a dime to spare?

So I  can buy a crawdad

and catch a fish in there?

My husband is an avid fly fisherman and I couldn't wait to share your poem with him! Thanks!

Synopsis
The dialect in this poem is what I used to hear when I visited family in Missouri. It may be hard to read for some and bring a smile to others, eiither way I hope you like it. This poem brings back fond memories of my cousin Gary each time I read it. I can still see us in the creek behind the house on those hot summer days. Ahhh, that was some pretty good fishing and an even better swimming hole.
