Mahogany Doors

I don’t know what lies beyond those mahogany doors

Others, so like me, pass by the window

Skin tanned and eyes bright

I study my own fingers in the dim light

Pale, and cold

Cold and pale

But I look around, and I see no reason to leave

No reason to step through the threshold

I’m fine if I stay- fine as long as I breathe

They’re smiling, and I turn my own lips up

Just so I can understand

But I don’t

No. I don’t. And Idon’t need what lies beyond

What they have

What they feel

The warmth. The Joy… It’s not real.

Just a dream

a cool breeze on a faraway shore

I don’t want…don’tneed… to open

Those mahogany doors
