Reflections on an old family friend my toaster

I am sorry to report my toaster died a few weeks ago. While this may sound trivial to some, let me fill you in on its history. This incredible device arrived in my family on my parent’s wedding day in March 1943 as a wedding gift.  It was part of my inheritance after my parents died and it gave me comfort to have something from my childhood. And yes folks it worked till just a few weeks ago so it was 65 years old. They don’t make them like that anymore.

Anyway it made the perfect piece of toast. You know not burned or under done…..perfect with gold color and just the right amount of crunchiness. I am sorry to report I have yet to find one which even comes to close to this high standard.

My journey to seek a replacement started at the local WallyWorld. I was faced with choices of about 10 or more brands of toasters. All sizes, shapes, colors, 2 slices vs. 8 slices (who needs 8 slices of toast?) and I left the store with something from the middle of the pack and in basic black. Oh before I go on for those who don’t know what WallyWorld is, it is the local name for a large chain of stores other wise known as Wallmart.

My first venture was a flop and quickly returned. Off to Lowes I went and I purchased another one. The jury is still out on it and if it will stay.

The old toaster is now polished, cleaned, buffed and holds a prominent spot in the house currently on my fireplace mantle. I cannot bear to just toss it in the garbage. It is history and deserves some respect or maybe a proper burial. Besides I may just come across someone who can fix it! Then I can again have the perfect piece of toast just one more time.

This must never be thrown in the trash. Who knows, maybe someday it can be fixed!
