An Honest Man

He carries the green silk dress

over his arm     her silver strappy

high-heel sandals dangle

from his right hand     the delicate

strand of pearls in his left hand catch

on the coat rack as he walks

through the hallway     they scatter

roll across polished hardwood

toward the open door.

It’s what she would have wanted

the dress     the pearls     that hint

of mystery and adventure     he only

wanted her     suggested many times

that she make an honest man of him.

‘We have all the time in the world’

she used to say.

The next day after the service

he goes home to his third floor

rental     sits in the worn blue

wingback chair until a pale moon

shines in through the uncurtained window.

In the soft light he leans back

takes a long deep drag

soft ribbons of smoke vanish

above his head     the fist

of his left hand opens slightly

and he gazes at the pearls

huddled there like hostages

or the dreams of an honest man.
