Project # 1

My example of a Digital Media Method applicable to my Capstone Project, is a short music video/advertisement clip promoting Mary J. Blige’s new single as well as advertising Apples iPod. The video is to promote the purchase of an iPod to download music from Apple’s iTunes store, by musical artist, such as Mary J. Blige. What I found significant about my example is the graphics and how visually enticing and crisp the video is. It was shot on a green screen, then digitally mastered. The video is shorter than a minute long but is very engaging. Even a few shots appear to almost look like an animation.

In the movie and film world, they make the impossible look real. The illusion is created by a special effects technique known as traveling matte or blue or green screen. This technique allows actors and scale models to find themselves in totally imaginary situations [i.e. in space ships, dangling from rope bridges over gorges, flying through the air (a la Superman)] and have it look completely real in the theater. News reporters are made to look like they are on location when they are not, and complete segments in TV shows can be created this way to make it look like the segment was filmed on location when, in fact, no one left Los Angeles.

All of these special effects can be done in one studio with a background made of a blue or green screen (traveling matte), a camera, digital software and one creative imagination.
