For my article I chose to write about Eric Brevig's movie Journey To The Center Of The Earth, and its technological advances in the field of three dimensional filming. One of a growing number of films to return to the three dimensional possibilities of a motion picture, Brevig and his production team have made advances in the techniques which may very well facilitate a larger movement to this type of process. Now using digital cameras with lens mechanisms separated from the camera itself by fiber optic cables, they are able to position the dual lenses necessary for the effect closer together. This makes the rigging of the cameras far simpler and more importantly, much more portable. Aside from the filming advantage, closer lenses also help to reduce eye strain when viewing a composited shot. He also goes on to describe his method for filming the main focal points as closer to the picture plain where the eye is more comfortable, rather than many similar films making too drastic a shift in depth of field. It is possible that with advances in technology and technique to create a less strenuous and more cost effective product, three dimensional film may very well be the future of the industry as the inclusion of synched sound and color at one time were.
