Shy Eyes
Ah such a pretty young girl, I wonder if she even knows it?  Judging by the way she smiles shyly and averts her gaze when I smile back, I doubt it.  Before long she will get lost in the cacophony of voices telling her what to do and how to act.  Those voices will tell her she isn’t pretty unless she wears all the latest fashions, and cakes her face in layers of suffocating makeup.  They will tell her to paint herself up like a little doll. I wonder how she will respond to all of that. Will she get dressed up like all the others?  Will she go to the trendy club and dance to the beat of their drums?  From the look of her bashfully smiling face I can’t see that happening.  She has the eyes of a wild doe, full of wonder and curiosity, yet ready to bolt into some unseen forest at the slightest shift of my posture. She looks happy to see me standing behind the counter.  She grabs an order of poppers from the hot case, then pays with a five dollar bill, and waits in simple silence for me to give her the change.  She takes her food and her money to a table near the counter and sits with a friend who has already ordered.  Their books sit opened but untouched on their table, as they compare the events of their days.  Every once-in-awhile through my peripheral vision, I catch her sneaking a stealthy glance my way.  Every time I turn to answer her furtive glances with a warm smile, she snaps her head back into what ever conversation is passing between her and her friend. The warmth in my smile is increased tenfold every time this little exchange takes place.  I can’t help but feel warm inside, when I think about those innocent eyes.
