Short Check Blues

VERSE I
Oh you can hear that song start playin,
When you’re walkin down the side of the road,
with a gas can in one hand and your last smoke in the other.

Yea it starts soundin louder and louder,
When you’re reaching deep into an empty fridge,
Grabbin that last tall frosty can of cheap beer.

CHORUS I
Just what are you goin to do,
When you wear holes in your shoes,
And no one out there is goin to hire you,
Just sing the short check blues.

VERSE II
You can hear that song goin through your head,
When you’re sittin at the bar starin into an empty glass,
Not ready to leave, but too broke to stay and play.

It’s growin from a little tune into a full ballad,
When you’re sittin at the table and not getting enough,
You want a steak, but you can’t even afford a salad.

CHORUS II
This shit ain’t nothing new,
The land lord says your rent is due,
And your boss doesn’t have any more money for you,
Just sing the short check blues.

VERSE III
The old song starts seapin in again,
When your cloths are getting thread bare,
And all the pretty girls just point and stare.

Yea that simply melody becomes a throbin symphony,
When you’re always runnin way too late,
Because you gotta take the heel-toe everywhere you go.

CHORUS III
Now what the hell are you goin to do,
When you’re down to your very last can of stew,
And you don’t know if you can make it through?
Just scream out the no cash, low pay, short check blues.
