As the director of gritty, films such as 28 Days later and Trainspotting, Danny Boyle took a new toll in Sunshine. Boyle was unaccustomed to finalizing his films by relying on the visual effects team. But influenced by visual effects supervisor Tom Wood he changed his ways. In the film some effects that were heavily used were some shots of the sun's surface in the observation room of the ship. The sun's surface throughout the movie was a violent 3D displacement. Maya and RenderMan software were used to create the sun's shots. Applying 3D, fluid driven elements to join paintings which created the closer partial sun and descent into the sun's views.
