Local Familes Attend Back-to-School Fair
Nearly 80 community vendors participated, multicultural entertainment performed and exciting giveaways were held at this year’s 15th Annual Community Back-to-School Health and Educational Fair. As parents and students prepare for school, over 10, 000 people attended this year’s free event on Saturday July 20th. Nevada Youth Alliance (NYA) collaborated with Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, Wal-Mart, Amerigroup, Three Square, Southern Nevada Health District and countless others to host this year’s event. This year’s fair provided 5, 000 backpacks replete with school supplies for school-age children and a multitude of health and educational information for parents. Most activities were free of charge including eye and hearing screenings for youth and adults, youth physicals, immunizations, blood pressure and blood sugar checks for family members, youth and family education and prevention program information. There were booths where attendees could learn about Nevada Checkup and Nevada Health Exchange. Medicaid was also there to give information about card uses and benefits. Cashman Center featured a myriad of vendor booths, exhibits, activities and mini health facilities. The University of Las Vegas School Of Dentistry provided oral hygiene instruction, oral health screenings, oral cancer screenings, and fluoride varnishing. The Animal Foundation participated, providing adoptable dogs. All of the dogs were spayed or neutered, microchipped, vaccinated and ready to go to their new home. Sports Clips provided a limited number of free youth haircuts as well. A visual highlight of the event was a local group of artists, Mexico Vivo Dance Company, who performed throughout the day in a kaleidoscope of bright colors. From dance presentations to fashion shows, both youth and parents enjoyed the performances. Large Vision Business Network Mixer and Sam’s Club gave away an array of prizes. An 8-days and 7-nights Condominium Vacation was given to three lucky winners. Ten participants won “Supermarket Magic”, a $1,000 savings on groceries. The 15th Annual Community Back-to-School Health and Educational Fair is a vital service to the Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson, and Boulder City communities.
