Harry Truman Takes Command

Harry Truman Takes Command

By Elton Camp

Few expected such a surprise

From the man with owlish eyes

Most of his life saw no success

So, almost none did he impress

Yet, his competitors in an election did defeat

So that in the U.S. Senate he could take a seat

FDR had been President for many years

His run for a fourth time met with cheers

Way before his campaign even began

Pictures show that he was a dead man

Caution was needed as what to do

When filling the spot number two

But very few seemed to realize

The look of death in his eyes

“So that Missouri we carry,

For VP let us pick old Harry.”

He is just a harmless cuss

Not likely to cause any fuss

Besides, there is no reason why

FDR, our godly leader, should die

But the Grim Reaper came just the same

And abruptly called the President’s name.

That change almost none did hail

But soon began to weep and wail

The job Harry Truman did not eschew.

Said, “I think it is something I can do.”

Responsibility I do not fear

Because the buck stops here

So before the world he stood

Did as well as any man could

Critics said, “He is just a fool.

No second term should he rule.”

Dewey will become the man of the hour

At the election, he’s sure to go in power

Very few thought Truman had a chance to win,

But from the back of a train he ran with a grin

Dewey let his campaign begin to lag

For White House was packing his bag

A newspaper announced Truman’s loss

But the truth was, he was still the boss
