Modern Ballet

                                                                    a reminiscence

her feet shine, the silence beneath her toes, it, so dark

yet brighter, they, than the stage’s purity vast and  black

is The Black of the floor

unseeable but knowable is the stage of a flamingo in flight, head upraised

purpled in the dusks depthless as seas brushing

blare mists off unseen shores

                                        of anticipation

her feet will shine upon the silent stage, so vast, virginal

she shall from the air pry its dark away, and knowingly

adept, the dark awaits beyond the gorgon-eye lights

and she shall toll the wait of the audience like a moonless night’s bright pond

cupping lovers swimming

                   the present song

he comes to her from the side

together they shall dance this night like the roar, tender, of motion

in birth

slow as a ribbon they undo

the rainbow myth of contrasts and water
