October Celebration #27 (2011)
Half asleep,
You hear a sound,
Something soft and hardly perceptible,
Outside your door...
You wake up enough to remember,
All the doors are locked,
The only other person here,
...Is in the shower,
You can hear them now...
So you stop and listen,
Much more awake now,
And there it is again;
Someone is pacing up and down the hallway,
Then you hear something even more distinctive:
A candy wrapper,
One of the ones from the jar given to you,
By a Grandmother,
Just before she died...
To scared to move,
You sit there and listen,
Occasionally the pacing slows outside your door,
But the handle never turns,
Your door never opens,
And eventually you hear no other sounds...
Perhaps they went away after all...
Half an hour later,
You finally get the courage,
To venture outside your room.
At first glance,
You see nothing,
No footprints,
No nothing;
Everything is normal,
And as it was before,
"You were just hearing things...silly,"
You tell yourself.
And then in the corner,
Not far from your door,
You spot it:
A candy wrapper,
No mistaking it,
It's definitely from one of the candies in the jar...
Your blood runs cold,
And your heart skips a beat...
...So someone was here after all...
Suppressing a shiver,
You look around;
No one's there of course...
...Just you, seemingly alone...
