Echoes
Echoes in my head
Invade my present discourse.
Ringing in my ears evokes
Noises of another time,
Another place, so long ago—
Same words that once were said.

Faces of today,
Ever tainted by my eyes,
Awaken images I thought
Forgotten, left to die,
To turn to dust and thus remain
Memories of yesterday.

In the here and now,
The past remains the present.
It can never be forgotten,
Never lost, or buried,
And it will always tint the hue
In which I see the now.

Never to be free
From the joys and worries,
People, promises, loves, and fears
I thought I left behind.
An ever-present, ruthless foe
My past is doomed to be.

Still, I plead:

Echoes in my head,
Just let me be.

I can definitely feel you on this one! Nicely encapsulated.
