THE WASTED YEARS
For years I have stood in the shadows
Taking whatever I could have of you
I believed you when you said you loved me
That was all I had to hold on to
But today something happened
That I just can't ignore
I sat and watched from a distance
You kissed her when you walked in your door

You told me your marriage had ended
But, because of the kids you had to stay
After you fulfill your obligations
You and I would be moving away
How could I have been so blind
To believe you year after year
I am sorry for the years I have wasted
And causing her so many tears

Please don't call tomorrow
I can't be with you anymore
Pick up all you belongings, and walk out my door
Drive from me slowly, please don't look behind
It's hard enough to leave you
Please don't make me change my mind

When you wake tomorrow morning
As she lay's there by your side
Be thankful for our memories
Though they may fade in time
We had so much laughter, good times through the years
Just say hello if you see me, and remember how much I cared

this is the stuff. the things that life is made of...and wonderful novels too. this character, this voice in the poem...do we feel empowered for her, or angry at him, do we feel angry at her for wasting the faith in him, do we feel happy that the tragedy is ended or upset he's scott free. lots to think on, lots to learn from. i think many folks can identify with this whether its relationships, or other situations that take us away from our focus.

I liked your emotional depth here and the realization that it will never be. How many people do this same thing and waste so many years? You told their story here and you told it well.
