Ode to Kevin
Ode to Kevin

“Miss, can we go on the computer?
MISS!”
A deep breath in and out you hiss,
“Not today, Kevin”

“Miss, I don’t want to work, can’t we just mess around?
PLEASE!”
Stand up straight and lock your knees,
"Not today, Kevin”

"Miss, can I sit by Jack, Miss?
Can I sit by Jack?”
Roll your eyes, smile sweetly back –
"Not today, Kevin”

"Miss, I’m sick of this, just had PE,
Can’t I just go home?”
Grit your teeth, suppress a moan,
"Not…right…now…Kevin!”

“Miss, Jess is laughing at me,
Miss, Jess is laughing at me!”
Book goes down, you just can’t see if
Jess has laughed at Kevin.

"But Miss, she’s laughing, you won’t do
Nothing! Oh my God!”
You look around, you think it’s odd
That Jess should laugh at Kevin.

"Look Miss, she’s done it, Miss
AGAIN!”
You close your eyes and count to ten,
"Jess, please don’t laugh at Kevin”

"Miss, I don’t get it – I just don’t
Get it.  I DON’T UNDERSTAND!”
You move across to lend a hand:
"This is all you do, Kevin”

"Miss, I’ve done it, Miss, come
here, Miss it’s really good!”
You move across, you hoped he would,
"Good work, Kevin!”

I agree with Lindsay. Cute yet easy to imagine the childlike quality of it. I think Kevin was one very lucky child to have you as his teacher.
