Bertram is the author of More Deaths Than One and A Spark of Heavenly Fire, soon to be published by Second Wind Publishing. A reader, writer, researcher, Bertram is on a quest to find her place in the real and the virtual worlds. Life changes us, and so, in a strange way, as we age, we become reborn. But as what? That is the question.
More Deaths Than One: Bob Stark returns home after 18 years in Southeast Asia to discover that the mother he buried before he went to Vietnam is dead again. He attends her funeral and sees himself married to his college girlfriend. Is his other self a hoaxter or a doppelganger, or is something more sinister going on?
A Spark of Heavenly Fire: In quarantined Colorado, where hundreds of thousands of people are dying from an unstoppable disease called the red death, insomniac Kate Cummings struggles to find the courage to live and to love. Her new love, investigative, reporter Greg Pullman, is determined to discover the truth behind the red death at all costs, until the cost -- Kate's safety -- becomes more than he can pay.
Bertram's publisher says: "I was told by some other small publishers with whom I had done research that I was going to get mountains of unacceptable crap for every worthy thing I received. So when I got Pat's manuscript for A Spark of Heavenly Fire, which was like the first submission to Second Wind, I thought, "OMG, is this possible?!" I thought she was a ringer that one of the other writers had sent our way just to see if I was really reading the submissions. I knew in the first 20 pages that she was the real thing. Then, as we corresponded, I realized where I knew that name: she and I were neck and neck throughout the FCC contest on Gather. I remember reading her first chapter of More Deaths Than One and thinking, 'Oh, man. I hope her second chapter is messed up! I can't beat this.' Well, it just goes to show, if you can't beat 'em, publish 'em!"
