    • I'm a man. I'm thirty-five-years old. I'm black. But I'm so much more. Those are things I cannot change. But my soul burns. It wonders; and it wanders.

I'm a full-time college student. My major is biotechnology. Yes, biotechnology. Why not English Literature? My right brain functions best when my left brain is challenged. And nothing is quite as challenging as chemistry, so I'm very stimulated.

I grew up in Upstate South Carolina, but I live and go to school in Georgia. My goal is to be a professional writer. I've got a wealth of life experience. There are so many stories I've got to tell. My journey has just begun.

My twenties found me in a lucrative career as an account executive for a television station. But I didn't start there. My life in broadcast television and radio included experience in master control, broadcast engineering, news and commercial production, and ultimately selling my soul out for a successful sales career. It wasn't worth it. Integrity shouldn't be sold for any price; it is invaluable. That chapter of my life is over. The best is yet to come.

        • My tastes are electic. I love Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Langston Hughes, and Maya Angelou. Edgar Allen Poe gives me chills, and I love it! Anne Rice is a master at her craft. I've read everything by her except her romances. My favorite book is Giovanni's Room. I've read it at least five times, and I get something new each time. Baldwin was a treasure. My modern favorites are Stephen King, Stephen White, Terry McMillan, E. Lynn Harris, Michael Crichton, and the goddess Toni Morrison. There are many more, of course. I just finished The Line of Beauty and was entranced. I thought The Chemistry of Death was a fun read. Running With Scissors was painfully funny.

        • My all-time favorite movie is The Color Purple. It just works on so many levels. The dialogue is unforgettable, the characters so multi-dimensional, and the story is full of hope and triumph. I quote the movie as if it were a bible. The Shawshank Redemption ranks high on my personal list. I've watched it repeatedly, and can't turn away if I'm surfing cable and it's on. Dolores Claiborne is good. Tombstone, The Godfather, The Departed, and anything by Robert Altman are also favorites.

        • Whitney Houston is the best pop singer of the last 30 or so years. As she's aged, her voice has changed to reflect a woman who has lived life on her terms, and I love her for it. Van Morrison is a marvelous storyteller. Aretha Franklin has a fire in her voice that touches your soul. Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye created work that will stand the test of time.

        • I worked in television and radio broadcasting for over 15 years, so I'm a bit jaded when it comes to TV. But I do have a few favorites: American Idol (I was hooked from the 1st season. It's a guilty pleasure that I don't do without and refuse to apologize for.); Law & Order SVU (Love the stories and main characters.); Family Guy (Stupid, but sometimes witty show, and I love the little brat Stewie!); House (Great drama. Complicated hero.); Frasier (smart, cerebral, and funny); The Practice (There were some great years. It's a shame it didn't last.); Good Times (If only the ghetto could be so funny.); The Jeffersons (Still makes me laugh even though it's a bit dated. But good characters never lose their appeal); Ally McBeal (Good dramedy, even the fantasy bits were fun until it lost its way.) And finally, a couple of shows that I love secretly (with the exception of my friends here): Touched by an Angel (yea, I hear your groans, but Della Reese is a kick, and who can't love the "death angel?", Little House on the Prairie (Brings back good memories as a kid. Can't explain it.)

        • I listed some of favorite poets above, but here are some of the again: Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Maya Angelou, Walt Whitman, William Ernest Henley, Lord Byron, Langston Hughes, Edgar Allen Poe, Gwendolyn Brooks, e.e. cummings, Shakespeare (I like him better as a poet versus playwright)

        • USA Today gives me a comprehensive national and world view. It's written for 5th graders, but I know a lot of smart 5th graders, and that wasn't such a bad year. Seriously, there are too many good, maybe great papers, for me to read daily. So I pick my poison carelessly.

        • I'm arrogant to say I'm my own hero. When times were at their worst, no one could save me but myself. I think that makes me my savior. And when I do really stupid stuff, and have to deal with the consequences, my savior always comes to the rescue.

        • "Not all who wander are lost."--Tolstoy

        • I love natural science! Biology, chemistry, botany, and astronomy are my faves. I can read text books cover-to-cover on these subjects. That may be a symptom of serious illness. I'm also into herbarium collections (that's not kinky, it just means I like collecting plant samples, finding their scientific names, and natural habitats). But my absolute favorite pastime is reading about little known infectious diseases, the "sexy" ones: Ebola, Hanta virus, Mad Cow Disease, etc.... I want to use my use Biotech degree to discover the unknown vector of Ebola in the Congo one day, if malaria doesn't kill me there first. Otherwise, I'm the guy next door!
