Rosalita stumbled into the ditch and fell headlong into the stagnant water. She felt the glass shard puncture her hand and she cried out in pain. It was already dark and she missed the jump. She had to get up, she had to run. Her heart was clawing its way out of her chest with each pulse. She scrambled to her feet and dove into the woods behind her house. She had just finished her homework and come downstairs for dinner when she saw Mama. Mama was standing over her brother's limp body. The knife still dripped with his blood as she turned to see her twelve year old enter the room.
Mama's eyes burned with pure rage. With the knife raised and an animal-like growl, Mama leapt at her daughter. Rosalita screamed and ran. She whizzed by the trees, leaping over the stumps and holes she knew were there. Her hand throbbed with each step. She knew, just knew that if she could make it to her hideout, the one Mama didn't know about, that she would be safe.
She dodged the patch of cactus plants and slid into the wide open mouth of the cave. She climbed the rock wall inside and tucked herself behind one of the large rocks. From here, she could see anyone approaching but they wouldn't see her.
"Why" she thought, "why would Mama do this?" She held her breath and tried to sink into the rock when she heard . . .
