    • Emily Dickinson was born in Amherst, Massachusetts on December 10, 1830. She lived a most of her life as an introvert. She attended Amherst Academy before spending a short time at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary. After her time at the Seminary she returned back to her families house. She rarely left her home or had human interaction. Most of her friendships were carried out through her writings.

Dickinson was a prolific private poet. During her lifetime she choose only to publish a dozen or so of her nearly eighteen hundred poems. Dickinson's poems are recognized for lacking titles, short lines, slanting rhyme as well as unconventional capitalization and punctuation. Her poems also tend to deal with themes of death and immortality, two subjects which infused her letters to friends.

It was not until after Emily's death on May 15, 1886 that her cache of poems were discovered by her younger sister. In 1890, her first collection of poetry was published.
