Ryan Bartek is a writer and musician from The United States, born & raised in Metro Detroit and now living in Portland, Oregon. At 35 years old he is the author of 6 books. He is the head of Anomie Press, an upstart book company with 3 titles, Anomie PR, a PR firm servicing 1500+ niche markets worldwide, and Anomie Inc, his digital record label.

Known for his journalism in the metal/punk undergrounds due to his books and work for mass-market magazines & respected webzines, R. Bartek is widely known as a traveling writer who has toured the USA & Europe extensively gathering material for his output and promoting his works as Free Downloads, handing out 1000’s of flyers and CDs in every major USA city & EU capitol.

Releasing his major books “The Big Shiny Prison (Volume One)” [2009] and “Fortress Europe (The Big Shiny Prison Vol II)” [2012] as Free PDF’s proved to be highly successful, with each book surpassing 40,000+ downloads and creating a niche global readership.

Major online news services & print magazines abroad promoted both these books, including Blabbermouth, Fangoria, Terrorizer, Metal Maniacs, Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles, Hails & Horns, Metal Underground, MetalRules, Metal Forces + dozens of other highly respected webzines, fanzines & blogs.

2016 offers the publishing world The First Print Editions of both these books, as well as the upcoming autobiographical memoir “Anticlimax Leviathan” out on 11/15/16. All three of these 6x9 Paperbacks are available through Anomie Press for $18.95 / €18 through the Ingram Spark/LSI distribution network -- available at 55% wholesale discount to chain retailers in USA & Europe. All books will be on the systems of 38,000+ booksellers worldwide with additional distribution through Amazon USA, Europe & UK.

Ryan Bartek is also a musician from a number of bands with small “cult” followings including Vulture Locust, A.K.A. Mabus, Sasquatch Agnostic. He is also a spoken word artist and performs Outlaw Acoustic/AntiFolk under the alias "The REAL Man In Black." Currently he is vocalist of Portland Oregon’s metal/punk band Crime Machine, which are slated to tour Europe throughout October 2016. Bartek will be promoting his books heavily on this campaign, as he will be doing on all upcoming tours throughout 2017 and beyond.

Bartek was born and raised in the Detroit suburb of Dearborn, Michigan. From an early age Bartek was involved in art, video production, music and literature, playing in a number of local bands as well as promoting events.

By 2001 he began his journalism career at Real Detroit Weekly, a newspaper with a circulation of 75,000 per week. Starting as an intern, he eventually became the Chief Political Correspondent while simultaneously covering the local punk, metal, industrial and rock scenes in his infamous column "Mentality of One." From 2001-2005, Bartek expanded his journalistic output to a host of major publications including Metal Maniacs, PIT Magazine, AMP Magazine, and Hails & Horns, as well as a number of webzines.

On January 5th, 2005 Bartek’s first book “The Silent Burning” was released by Elitist Publications. The book received strong reactions as well as critical praise. This highly personal book detailed the authors own personal demons, expressed as an anthology of closely related, yet disjointed writings. The book fused a number of writing styles together including poetry, fiction, journal entries, dream narratives, journalism, and social essays.

Upon leaving Real Detroit Weekly, Bartek returned to the Detroit music scene as guitarist of metal/punk crossover act A.K.A. MABUS. The band recorded their debut album “Lord of The Black Sheep” in 2006 then disbanded that December when Bartek left Detroit to pursue traveling journalism.

Bolstered by his work in Metal Maniacs -- one of the largest English-language heavy metal magazines in the world -- Bartek remained on the road throughout 2007. He collected his interviews and experiences into a travel book entitled “The Big Shiny Prison (Volume One)” -- a book which examined the current dystopian American counterculture 40 years after the idealistic "Summer of Love." "The Big Shiny Prison (Volume One)" was released as a Free PDF download on November 15th, 2009 to a wealth of critical praise.

In the following years, Bartek accomplished national tours as a spoken word artist opening for Detroit, MI punk/funk group Downtown Brown, recorded numerous albums and continued to produce manuscripts and film screenplays.

Summer of 2011, Bartek set out to accomplish the second volume of "The Big Shiny Prison," this time traveling Europe. On February 29th, 2012 “Fortress Europe (The Big Shiny Prison Vol. II)” was released, again as a Free PDF download to heavy niche media coverage. The release was followed by yet another European book tour throughout Summer 2012.

Returning to Portland, Bartek once again focused on music. The result was VULTURE LOCUST -- a grindcore-based extreme metal project with death, thrash, doom, black & crust elements. Recording the demo, Bartek once again backpacked Europe Summer 2013 to personally hand out 1000's of flyers & CDs containing his entire discography & book collection across the EU.

In 2014 Bartek began releasing a 4 part journalism series "Return To Fortress Europe," featuring new tales of his travels. He also marketed two feature film screenplays "Crimson Atlas" [horror] and "Urban Dojo" [comedy/action], and completed an autobiographical book of memoirs "Anticlimax Leviathan."

Vulture Locust released a new promo "We Need To Talk" in May 2014 then proceeded to tear through the basement venue/dive bar world of Portland that summer, grinding their way into the filthy hearts of the metal/punk scene. VL released their official studio album "Command Presence" as a free download on 3/3/2015. This 15 track magnum opus of savage, nasty deathgrind has since amassed solid reviews & press from around the globe. VL will continue playing regional Northwest shows with an eventual West Coast tour to follow.

Bartek recently announced the creation of two new bands: a multi-style doom project SKULLMASTER and a grindy/thrashy/experimental punk outfit LURKING STRANGERS," both which are recording in 2016.

The First Print Editions of "The Big Shiny Prison (Volume One)" & "Fortress Europe (The Big Shiny Prison Vol II)" will be released in 2016, as well as "Anticlimax Leviathan," with worldwide distribution through Ingram Spark/LSI and also available worldwide through Amazon USA, Europe & UK.
